Alcalde de Binissalem junto al MI Martin Senff, ganador de la XIX edición.

The "Open Es Vermar" tournament was first held on September 1988, motivated by the former town councillor of Culture and Sports Mr. Juan Fontanet and organised by Mr. Sebastià Nadal.

As an anecdote we can comment that the mentioned tournament is older than the Binissalem Chess Club itself, being the predecessor of chess in Binissalem.

The very first edition had a local type taking part mainly young people from the town, and gathered a total of 22 players.

The referee of that tournament was Mr. Lorenzo Vives, a well-known person within the Balearic Chess World, being the president of the Balearic Chess Federation years before.

The contest was played in swiss system with seven rounds, with no ELO validity. Prizes were given in 2 separate categories.

In its 7th edition (1994) it was requested to the Balearic Chess Federation the recognition of the tournament to all effects, valid for ELO FEDA, extend the number of rounds to 8.

Since 2001 the tournament is valid for ELO FEDA and FIDE, and played at 9 rounds.

Up to now a total of 2 MI, 4 MF and over 15 MB as well as numerous Majorcan champions and a couple of Balearic ones.

A MI has won 4 times. The Italian Fernando Braga obtained a total of 3 victories

The participation of the Majorcan MI Antonio Gamundí in 2 occasions is also to highlight, who has obtained a first and second prize.

Tournaments are being held consecutively since 1988, exceeding the 100 inscriptions in some editions.

The GM Paco Vallejo honoured us with his visit during the 15th Edition, attending the prize ceremony.
